Spoils of War Butterfly” is a striking exploration of the complex relationship between trade, conflict, and the commodification of human life. This limited edition print is taken from Bran Symondson’s original sculpture, “Spoils of War Folding-Stock”—a decommissioned AK-47 sourced from a conflict zone and meticulously collaged with real burnt U.S. dollar bills and real butterflies. This piece is currently on display at the YellowCorner Gallery in Monaco.

Within the weapon’s magazine, traditional ammunition is replaced with symbolic commodities—including opium, oil, and diamonds—materials intrinsically linked to regions shaped by conflict. Each element serves as a stark reminder of the economic forces that fuel global instability, transforming the artwork into a powerful commentary on the intersection of violence, wealth, and commerce.

In contrast, for this piece only, Bran introduces butterflies—a signature element of his work—symbolising freedom, transformation, and the resilience of nature. Their delicate presence against a weapon of war creates a compelling tension: while nature moves freely, humanity remains entangled within systems driven by profit and power.

This juxtaposition invites the viewer to reflect on the structures that govern our world—and the true cost of them.
